Emerging schools champions 2023/24

They got off to a great start, winning all four of their pool games against Newport, Villiers and Rice College to qualify for the semi-final. They then beat St Caimin's in the semi-final progressing to the final thanks to tries from Danny Hearty, John Keogh and Darragh Leo.

They faced with a difficult task taking on a fancied St Joseph's CBS Nenagh side in the final. The side from Limerick's Northside got off to an excellent start when flying winger Jordan Browne scored a brilliant solo try.

Nenagh showed their strength and responded with two quick tries. However, the Thomond side showed great resilience to go back down the pitch and Browne showed his pace after an excellent pass from Kenneth Duggan to score the vital try in the corner.

Ten minutes to go and the Nenagh students were putting huge pressure on the Thomond Community College tryline and it looked certain the Tipp students were going to score and win the game.

However, the Thomond players worked tirelessly and put in a massive defensive effort. Jamie Markham, Patrick McCallig and John Wyse led by example and defended heroically.

Nenagh refused to give up and kept battling the Thomond try line. However, the Northside students were rewarded with their efforts, Connie Quilligan making a huge tackle to dislodge to ball during an opposition attack. The final whistle blew and sparked huge celebrations. The entire panel represented the school with great pride and worked very hard as a team all season long.

The sides had finished level, 10-10, but Thomond Community College claimed the title on the 'first try scored' rule.

Afterwards winning coach Gareth O’Hanlon said: “We as a school couldn’t be prouder of our team. They showed great discipline, courage and togetherness to win the Munster cup. We have a panel of thirty-five players and only three of them are registered with a club, so to win this trophy is extra special.

"The Emerging Schools Cup offers the opportunity for schools to participle in many rugby competitions throughout the year and celebrate the end of season with the finals day in Thomond Park. Credit must go to Munster rugby for organising such a fantastic completion for so many schools across the providence."

“For many of our students it was a dream come true to play in Thomond Park, and to win such a big competition was extra special. I am so proud of our students, they have worked so hard all year and have really come together as a team. They were up against a very strong Nenagh side in the final. I think going into the final as under dogs really motivated out boys and they loved the challenge.

"They are a very close group and worked extremely hard as a team and that’s what got them over the line. They learned a very valuable lesson about team work and they have created memories that will last a life time, I am extremely proud of their achievement."
