Senior Cycle ‘Option Subjects Fair’ 2025
On Tuesday, 11th of March we held our inaugural Senior Cycle ‘Option Subjects Fair’. Each of the 19 senior cycle option subjects in Thomond Community College had a dedicated stand at the fair where they displayed materials such as textbooks, posters, examples of student work, and other items that effectively highlighted the content and benefits of their subject. This gave our 3rd Year and Transition Year students a first-hand insight into what to expect from each course in Senior Cycle.
Each subject department was represented by one 5th Year and one 6th Year student at the stand. These students shared their personal experiences with the subject, offering a student perspective on the positives and challenges of the course. Additionally, a teacher was also present at each stand, and they provided invaluable insights for students with very specific questions, especially in relation to new subject specifications being introduced in September 2025.
In general, prospective senior cycle students were keen to learn about several key areas during the fair:
- Aspects of the course similar to, or a continuation of, the Junior Cycle.
- Parts of the course which would be new or different from the Junior Cycle.
- How the subject is assessed (e.g., exams, coursework, projects).
- Careers linked to the subject.
