Thomond Community College students take part in story exchange, a method for encouraging empathy developed by Narrative 4. Story Exchange takes place in the library under the guidance of trained facilitators. Story exchange highlights shared humanity and helps students to develop empathy. Through the exchange of personal narratives, the students see the world and themselves with empathy. Students are assigned partners and share their stories. They then come together in a circle and hear their story told back to them in the first person and tell their partners' stories as if it were their own. This is an enjoyable workshop which brings students closer together and also develops their oral literacy skills.
